Alexander Ovechkin, a forward for the Washington Capitals, is looking to repeat after winning the 2008 Hart Trophy for the NHL's Most Valuable Player, but he has some competition. The Pittsburgh Penguins' center Evgeni Malkin and Detroit Red Wings' center Pavel Datsyuk put up impressive numbers this season.

Ovechkin and His Bid for MVP Ovechkin, being the winner of the Hart Trophy last season, is an early favorite to win again. If the 23-year-old can pull off consecutive wins, he'll be the first player to do so since goaltender Dominik Hasek won for the Buffalo Sabres in 1997 and 1998. He could also be the first forward to do so since Wayne Gretzky won the MVP honors eight years in a row from 1980-1987.

Finishing second behind Malkin in regular season points with 110, Ovechkin led the league with 56 goals, earning the Rocket Richard Trophy. He also joined Gretzky and Penguins' great Mario Lemieux as the only players to score 200 goals and earn 200 assists in their first four seasons. Ovechkin averaged 1.39 points per game, and led the Capitals to second place in the Eastern Conference.

Malkin's Attempt at the Hart Trophy Malkin finished the regular season with 113 points, winning the Art Ross Trophy ahead of Ovechkin. Malkin's teammate Sidney Crosby won the Art Ross two seasons ago, and Ovechkin pulled in the win last season.

Malkin scored the most goals for the Penguins this season with 35, and led the Penguins and the league with an impressive 78 assists. Playing in all 82 games this season, the 22-year-old Malkin embraced his new alternate captain leadership role and helped elevate the Penguins to another playoff berth at fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Datsyuk Attempts MVP for Second Consecutive Year Datsyuk, the 30-year-old center, brings experience and wisdom to the young competition, making his second consecutive bid for the Hart Trophy. He led the Red Wings this regular season in points with 97, and finished fourth in the league. He scored 32 goals, and led the Wings with 65 assists, which placed him fifth in the league.

Datsyuk's plus-minus ranked third in the league, first for the Wings, with 34. He is also a finalist for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which is awarded to the league's top defensive forward. He has been awarded the Lady Byng Trophy for the past three seasons, and is a finalist for the award again this year.

And the Winner is... The winner will be announced on June 18 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the NHL's annual award banquet. The Professional Hockey Writers' Association votes for deserving players each year. Gretzky has won this award more times than any other player נnine career wins, and eight consecutively. This season marks the first time that three Russian players have been finalists.
