When did the NHL become the pro-sports equivalent of the little sister in a family of all older brothers?

Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals scored his league leading 50th goal last night against Tampa Bay. It wasnӴ his flashiest goal by any stretch of the imagination, and especially not one that wouldӶe found its way on to highlight reels for years to comeŠthat was until after the goal. After scoring his 50th goal, Ovechkin dropped his stick to the ice and motioned to warm his hands from the heat his stick was giving off ֠as to say that his holding a Ԩot stickԮ

Who knew that would upset so many people.

The hockey world was a buzz today with chatter of Ovechkinӳ actions last night. Most people seemed to be so disgusted with the gesture and suggested that a line had been crossed, that Ovechkin showed no respect for the game and that now all minor league hockey players who may replicate Ovechkinӳ actions will have to be watched ֠and when they do duplicate him, they'll be banished from the hockey fraternity.

Kypreos Voices His Concern Leading the charge was former player, now turned ԢroadcasterԠNick Kypreos, who ripped Ovechkin a new one immediately after the game. Apparently Kypreos dug into his bag of other peopleӳ thoughts that he keeps lying around and pulled out Don Cherryӳ disgust with Ovechkin from weeks before. Today on his Hockeycentral show, Kypreos even defended Sean Avery for doing push-ups after scoring a goal while playing in Los Angeles ֠something that Kypreos claims that Avery would never do today because he learned his lesson.

So then why the attack on Ovechkin, Nick?

Ovechkin plays with heart, with passion and most importantly, with skill. If there is any reason to be upset about anything to do with his 50th goal last night, it should be the Tampa Bay defense who allowed him to beat three of them before sniping his shot passed Tampa goalie Simeon Varlamov.

Hockey Celebrations Kypreos has never had any problems with other Ԥisrespectful actsԠto the game like Teemu Selanne throwing his glove in the air and pretending to shoot it down or Mike Foligno jumping up and down like his feet were on fire or Theo Fleury gliding on his knees the length of the ice while pumping his fists in the air or even Tiger Williams riding his stick like a horse after every goal he scored.

No, they were no arguments then. Why?

The fact is that most pundits had made up their mind about Ovechkin before he ever laced up for the Capitalsfour years ago. Remember at the World Junior Championship when he celebrated before putting the puck in an empty net, eliminating Canada? That seems to be hard to let go for some.

Ovechkin is the best thing to happen to the NHL in a while. The guy is the best player in the game and he actually enjoys playing. Heӳ always got a smile on his face and is just as cheerful when a teammate scores as when he does, so whatӳ wrong with a little emotion?

Players get away with being upset and smashing their sticks or throwing water bottles at refs, but when they show a little emotion in a positive way, guys like Kypreos and Cherry are ready to bring them down by any means necessary.
