Sidney Crosby has faced a lot of criticism in his short 4 year career as an NHLer. Is it simply because he is Gary Bettman’s golden boy? There has been debate as to whether or not Pittsburgh should have made him their captain. Pundits were quick to point out his short temper and loud mouth during his first two years in the league. Critics accused him of being dirty and cheap. Writers were quick to create a feud between him and Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin. Fans questioned his leadership abilities and the comparisons to Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux were endless.

All fair questions and concerns; it comes with the territory for a highly touted, first overall drafted, teenaged sensation, franchise saving, league spokesman like Sidney Crosby.

Crosby Lidstrom Handshake Crosby’s latest public relations nightmare came immediately after he and his Penguins just finished winning their very first Stanley Cup against their now bitter rival the Detroit Red Wings.

Game 7 of the finals had ended on a very passionate note. The Red Wings were closing in on Pittsburgh’s 2-1 lead late in the game, and if not for a last second save by Marc Andre Fleury, the game would have gone into overtime. Crosby, like any other player would have done, was amidst the crowd of Penguins on the ice celebrating. That wasn’t the problem. The problem was that Crosby did not make it to centre ice in time to shake the hand of Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom. Whether or not Crosby did it intentionally or by accident is not up for debate in this forum, but listening to talk radio today in Toronto you would have thought that Crosby laughed in Lidstrom’s face or insulted his mother. All he did was fail to shake the man’s hand. The Face Of The NHL Crosby is in a situation unlike any other that the NHL has seen. Crosby may not be the best player to ever lace up a pair of skates in league history – heck, he might not even be the best player in the league today. But what he represents is what the league loves, and as we all know, what the league loves is what the fans hate. There appears to be a growing anti-Crosby movement around the league and its fans. Crosby doesn’t have the personality that Ovechkin has, agreed. He might not have the finesse of an Ilya Kovalchuk or the size and strength of a Shea Weber. Crosby hasn’t even been the hero in the big game like Eric Staal (or Max Talbot) has. But what Crosby lacks in specific areas of the game, he more than makes up in raw, undeniable, unmatched talent. Sure he looks like a 17 year old high school senior and he had one of the worst playoff beards in recent memory, but watch the kid play. He skates beautifully, his vision is remarkable and his ability to be one step ahead of the play is tremendous. A lot of pressure has been put on Crosby not only by the league, but by the fans and the media to be the next coming of Gretzky. Crosby has done endless spots for the NHL, he doesn’t run his mouth off to the media, he caries himself with dignity and class off the ice and he just became the youngest captain to ever win the Stanley Cup against all odds. What more can you ask of the guy? In Canada, fans pride themselves on loving the “tough guys”. Wendel Clark was, and still is admired in Toronto, Jerome Iginla is a God in Calgary, ditto Dion Phaneuf. So why are these players revered not only in their respective cities, but league wide? Whereas Crosby has to constantly be held accountable for every minor action. Crosby has done some stupid things in his career, let’s not fool ourselves. His after-the-play stick work to Kirk Maltby and Henrik Zetterberg’s ankles in the finals, his whining to the referee’s about bogus penalty calls and his failure to shake Lidstrom’s hand were all mistakes made by Crosby – but why the witch hunt? Enjoy Crosby for the player he is – a ridiculously talented, hot-headed, emotionally driven, often immature Stanley Cup Champion – and just lay off the guy. After all, he is still a kid.
