Thinking outside the box at the 2009 NHL awards The NHL awards ceremony, as painful as they are to watch, is a very significant day on the hockey calendar. Legacies are born, heroes are crowned, dull thank you speeches are made and the NHL`s elite are recognized for their skill. Most already know who will walk away with trophies at the NHL awards ceremony, but who really deserves the recognition?

There are very few when it comes to the NHL awards; there as never been a moment when those in attendance, and watching at home, have been utterly shocked as to who walked out with any hardware. Maybe its time that voters don`t cast their ballots based on stats and popularity. Perhaps it`s time that the lesser-light NHL stars are recognized for their hard work and perseverance. Without even considering the nominated players, here`s who is just as worthy of each NHL award: James Norris Memorial Trophy; awarded annually to the top "defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position"
The 2009 Nominees:
Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins Will win
Mike Green, Washington Capitals
Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings
Who should win: Dennis Wideman, Boston Bruins.
Wideman quietly had a brilliant year behind Chara in Boston. He was tied for the most points by a defenseman on the Bruins (50), third on the team in +/- (+32), a team high 135 blocked shots, only 34 penalty minutes and added 6 power play goals for the Eastern Conference top seated Bruins. Jack Adams Award; awarded annually to the coach "adjudged to have contributed the most to his team's success."
The 2009 Nominees:
Andy Murray, St. Louis Blues
Claude Julien, Boston Bruins - will win
Todd McLellan, San Jose Sharks
Who should win: Joel Quennville, Chicago Blackhawks
Quennville assumed the head coaching position in Chicago just 4 games into the 2008/2009 season after Dennis Savard was fired. After taking over the team, Quennville led the Blackhawks to a 44-22-12 record, good enough for 4th in the Western Conference. Not an easy feat considering the Blackhawks are very young, inexperienced and to start the season Chicago had no clear-cut number 1 goalie. Hart Memorial Trophy; awarded annually to the "player adjudged most valuable to his team"
The 2009 Nominees:
Geno Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins
Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings
Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals Will win
Who should win: Miikka Kiprusoff, Calgary Flames
45 wins - the most in the league. 76 games played - the most in the league. 4,417:50 minutes on the ice - the most in the league (for a goalie), 2155 shots against the most in the league, 2.84 GAA and a 9.03 save %. Sure Calgary fizzled at the end of the season, but how bad would`ve they been without this guy? Frank J. Selke Trophy; awarded annually to the forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game. The 2009 Nominees: Mike Richards, Philadelphia Flyers Will win Ryan Kesler, Vancouver Canucks Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings Who should win: Loui Eriksson, Dallas Stars Not a popular choice by any stretch, but consider this: The Dallas Stars allowed 251 goals against in 2008/2009, 6th worst in the league. Despite that, Eriksson was a + 14 with 63 points and 1 short handed goal while averaging just under 20 minutes a game. It`s easy to consider players on top teams like Detroit or Boston with a solid plus/minus, but to have a decent stat like that on a team like Dallas really speaks to Eriksson`s defensive abilities. Vezina Trophy; awarded annually to the goaltender who is "adjudged to be the best at this position". The 2009 Nominees: Steve Mason, Columbus Blue Jackets Tim Thomas, Boston Bruins Will win Niklas Backstrom, Minnesota Wild Who should win: Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks Although his 2008/2009 was injury plagued, Luongo was lights-out when he was healthy. A 33-13-7 record with 7 shutouts and a 2.34 GAA showed the hockey world that he is the best there is today. Calder Memorial Trophy; awarded annually "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NHL." The 2009 Nominees: Bobby Ryan; Anaheim Ducks Steve Mason; Columbus Blue Jackets Will win Kris Versteeg, Chicago Blackhawks Who should win: Blake Wheeler, Boston Bruins Very few players come into the NHL and not only look like they belong, but play like they belong in their first year. Wheeler was a 10 year veteran disguised as a rookie. He compiled 45 points, 3 game winning goals and a remarkable +36. Wheeler may not be as flashy as Ryan or Versteeg, and may not have gotten as many highlights as Mason, but Wheeler is a solid two-way player and will be for years. Lady Byng Memorial Trophy; awarded annually to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability" The 2009 Nominees: Zach Parise, New Jersey Devils Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning Will win Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings Who should win: Niklas Hagman, Toronto Maple Leafs Hagman proved that his 27-goal output in Dallas was no fluke by notching 22 goals in just 65 games, with only 4 minutes in penalties with the Leafs in 08/09. His offensive skills are second to none in Toronto and his work ethic will surely make him a fan favourite for years to come.
